G.I.F.T. grants presented
For the Troy Daily News

Project G.I.F.T. (Grants Investing in the Future of Troy) of Teen Leadership is a volunteer group made up of teenagers who are enrolled in the Teen Leadership Troy Program of the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce. Project G.I.F.T. is a collaboration between the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce, volunteers of the Teen Leadership Troy Program and The Troy Foundation. The grantmaking budget for this program is underwritten by The Troy Foundation. The program was designed to provide a hands on experience for teens enrolled in Teen Leadership Troy, to not only get familiar with our community's non-profits, but also to give them the tools needed to evaluate their own charitable giving and volunteer hours in the future.

The 2013 Teen Leadership Troy reviewed 15 applications with the requested amount totaling $7,057.98 and with their budget of $5,000 awarded the following:
  • Habitat for Humanity - $500 - Projects for 2014
  • Lincoln Community Center - $250 - Be True to You Dinner
  • Troy-Miami County Public Library - $365.70 - early literacy materials
  • Brukner Nature Center - $294 - Supplies for Wildlife Ambassadors
  • Hospice of Miami County Inc. - $500 - Camp Courageous
  • CASA/GAL of Miami County Inc. - $500 - CASA Caring Tree
  • New Path Inc. (GIVE) - $400 - Home Helpers
  • Dream Builders Group Inc. - $480 - The Clubhouse Sport and Art Days
  • Partners in Hope - $500 - Caregivers special events
  • First Place Food Pantry - $500 - Purchase food for pantry
  • FISH of Troy Inc. - $210.30 - Emergency crisis funding
  • St. Patrick Soup Kitchen - $500 - General support
Project G.I.F.T. will continue on an annual basis with each new class of Teen Leadership Troy. The goal of the program is to increase each participant's knowledge of the non-profit community by providing skills to evaluate an organization's effectiveness and purpose within the community, and to increase the involvement of youth in charitable activities, as a donor, volunteer or board member.
